“This building is a quintessential representation of UNM and it’s the perfect combination of our historic roots and the vision and energy propelling the University forward.” —Ethan Rule, director of UNM Marketing
UNM’s new Lobo Welcome Center (LWC) is prospective students’ first impression of UNM’s main campus. Creating a clear sense of arrival, the landscape design complements the thoughtful renovation of the 1941 John Gaw Meem building, and striking addition by McCLAIN+YU Architecture and Design, all while acknowledging the history of the building and its place within the larger campus landscape. The design pulls from the informal language of Garret Eckbo’s Campus Master Plan and his iconic Duck Pond design. The result is a strong sense of place that encapsulates UNM’s rich history and commitment to tradition, as well as the energy and momentum of its future innovators. This transformed space includes both space for large tour groups to gather and nooks for prospective students to meet one on one with advisors. Streetscape improvements along Yale in front of the LWC improve the pedestrian experience, beautify the public realm, and repeat a design vernacular that has recently been established on campus at renovated plazas and pedestrian gateways.
