TxDOT Knox County Safety Rest Area

with Richter Architects

Location: Knox County, TX

Completed: 2023

The renovated rest area now serves as a welcoming retreat for travelers along U.S. Highway 82.

Working with Richter Architects and the Texas DOT, our landscape renovation of the existing Knox County Safety Rest Area in north-central Texas aimed to revitalize a tired and outdated environment into a vibrant and sustainable oasis for travelers. After careful assessment of the existing trees, we identified those worthy of preservation and prioritized them in the design in order to maintain the rest area’s natural character, provide immediate shade for visitors, and habitat for wildlife. By introducing stunning new native ground-level plantings like fringed sage, beargrass, and blue grama, we aimed to increase biodiversity and visual interest throughout the seasons, while creating a resilient landscape capable of withstanding environmental challenges over time. The landscape also seamlessly integrates with the architecture, creating a harmonious blend of nature and human-made structures. The renovated rest area now serves as a welcoming retreat for travelers along U.S. Highway 82.
