with Mijksenaar

Location: Las Cruces, NM

Completed: 2023

A noteworthy event during the process was the virtual user journey activity. Here participants assumed different personas with disabilities and navigated the city to reach a designated destination.

The City of Las Cruces boasts a cherished parks and trails system that is adored by locals and draws visitors from both near and distant places. In an effort to enhance accessibility and improve navigation throughout the system, the City enlisted the expertise of Pland Collaborative to develop a comprehensive wayfinding plan. The outcome, known as the "Las Cruces Trail and Park Wayfinding System Plan," is specifically tailored for city parks and trails, intending to enhance access through an intuitive, functional, and inclusive signage system.

Pland collaborated with Mijksenaar, a signage firm based in Holland, to create a unique signage plan that captures the essence of the city while enhancing accessibility and establishing a unified system. The Plan's development involved an extensive public engagement campaign that featured both virtual and in-person meetings, a dynamic "Day of Action," and comprehensive surveys. The "Day of Action" involved setting up pop-up kiosks across the city, attracting over 120 participants who engaged in a range of exciting activities. The outreach strategy was thoughtfully tailored to meet the community's specific needs, aiming to make it engaging and enjoyable.

A noteworthy event during the process was the virtual user journey activity. Here participants assumed different personas with disabilities and navigated the city to reach a designated destination. This activity underscored the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities and fostered innovative solutions to facilitate their movement.

The final plan comprised a comprehensive sign family that addressed various sign types, situations, development standards, and construction costs. The dedicated team worked tirelessly for slightly over a year to bring the project to a successful conclusion.
