Pland Collaborative developed plans for a pocket park honoring the military veterans of Jal, NM. This small town has a proud history of service in the military and the community desired a prominent memorial space along their newly renovated Main Street project. Working with members of the City Council and the community, Pland developed a design using a strong geometric pattern to lead visitors along a pathway that not only highlights the branches of service, but also commemorates the various conflicts in which the veterans had served. A limited palette of high-quality materials was chosen to create a sense of permanence while focusing the users attention on the names of those who served. Custom concrete seating walls with a specialty finish were developed to accent the locally engraved granite walls. Xeric shrub plantings combined with salvaged boulders require low water use and easy maintenance. A grove of Chinese Pistache trees will create a shady respite in the warm months while providing a showcase of brilliant color when the leaves change in the fall. Despite several feet of elevation across the site, a deceptively simple grading plan was developed to ensure all walks met ADA accessibility standards without the use of ramps, stairs, or handrails. Pland prepared complete construction documents including planting, irrigation, lighting, hard construction, grading, site furnishings, and monument wall design.
