The focus of the project was to identify the preferred route for a non-motorized trail following the historic route to the greatest extent possible, and to identify sites within the project boundaries that can be developed for the general public to experience.
Pland Collaborative worked with Bernalillo County, the City of Albuquerque, and the National Park Service to provide a vision for the retracement, preservation, and development of El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro National Historic Trail within Bernalillo County. The focus of the project was to identify the preferred route for a non-motorized trail following the historic route to the greatest extent possible, and to identify sites within the project boundaries that can be developed for the general public to experience. Identifying the preferred route was based on analyses of existing conditions, and a robust public engagement strategy. The Development Concept Plan was developed to include historic sites and segments of the National Historic Trail. The plan conveys the vision for a developed trail through Bernalillo County that the public will easily recognize as unique and distinct from any other local or regional trails. The completed Development Concept Plan is intended to be the basis for coordination among public and private stakeholders seeking to implement the plan, as funding opportunities arise.
